I recently invited a friend to play this touching grass quest. I know I already posted a review during the jam rating period, but a few things stood out to me on the second go around:

  • Three months out, I still think the writing is nothing short of stellar. It's hard to believe this game was written in a month, let alone two weeks. Furthermore, now that I've been freed from the chains of bias against the ship in the Latter Part, I honestly can't say that it's the weakest part in the game for me. I don't think I can say that about any part.
  • I don't know if this was intentional, but the story was extremely accessible. I've introduced my friend to bits and pieces of Touhou's lore before, but as far as I'm aware, this is the first substantial bit of Touhou content she's ever seen. While there are a few in-jokes throughout the story ("podding" comes to mind), most of the characters' backstories and personalities are explored so thoroughly that she was able to understand (and thoroughly enjoy) everything that was going on. I never would've expected to be able to talk to her about Touhou in depth before introducing her to this game, but now we're discussing Kaguya and Mokou's dynamic and backstories as if she was a longtime fan. I can't even begin to explain how incredible this is to me.
  • And talk we did; this game, especially the epilogue, led to literal hours of discussion about its characters, dynamics, and themes. I think with her help, I was finally able to understand (at least one interpretation of) the epilogue. ROT13:

To close this off, I know this might seem a bit odd (and perhaps a bit corny), but I can't thank you enough for making this game. Both times I've played this game have resulted in critical personal revelations, especially after my friend and I discussed it in depth. I think I can honestly say that playing this game has changed my life for the better, which is nothing short of miraculous.

I really loved this! The sound design and backgrounds in general worked really well to accent scenes. I loved Reisen's vibes and style in particular, absolutely *immaculate*. I really liked the way Kana and Kotohime's dynamic was written (and also, as someone who's grayromantic myself, the representation feels very nice). A small thing, but I do like the way it was split into parts, with each part having a notably different focus; I think that helped to keep the transition from feeling jarring.

The one thing I want to comment on is that Mokou's change of heart felt a tad sudden to me? I don't mind it per se, and I feel like the way that entire exchange was implemented and written still made it a really effective moment. It's moreso just that Mokou's previous conversation and the way she seemed to talk about Keine in particular gave me the impression that she might need some more time to think about and understand her own feelings.

Also, would it be feasible to release the surprise bullet hell section as a standalone thing, or to provide an easy way to replay that specific section? I'm nowhere near good enough to actually do well in them, frankly, but they still seem like they could be a fun thing to try and get better at.

we have thought about making a slightly upgraded package version of the kotohimegames and YES that would absolutely include all of the bullet parts, and probably also multiple difficulties since the current one is pretty much only possible for most people with the infinite lives

i did not make the text part of this game so i cannot comment on mokou's situation in ways other than "i agree" but glad ya liked it overall!

Text maker here. Thanks for reading, and I'm glad you liked it!

I kinda wish there was more about Kana and Kotohime's time together. Months of interactions get skipped over, but maybe their friendship is cute enough to warrant a couple more scenes depicting it.

Yeah, you're right on the suddenness of Latter Part's ending. Sorry Keine got so sidelined there. I had contemplated having another scene or two involving Keine, exploring her relationship with Mokou and leading in to the final scene a little better. But there was basically no chance we were going to get a sprite for Keine in time, and I wasn't very confident in writing her as a character. It's the same deal with Reisen, though at least we could reuse a (beautiful) sprite from another project for her-- Keine had no such luck.

The bullet hell section was going to become a selectable option in the menu, but we ran out of time. Maybe we'll add one in an update.
